PWRFL Power’s, Kazutaka Nomura, does not take the simple things in life for granted. His first solo album is littered with songs about birds, cats, chopsticks, keys, and tomatoes, items you may very well find in your own urban apartment, but he also is not afraid of making light of typical heavy hitter topics like love and loss.
Kaz is a classically trained guitarist who moved to Seattle from Japan several years ago. He now can be found residing in both Seattle or New York City. First starting with an experimental band called Na, he decided to go solo in 2006 and began performing as PWRFL Power. The last couple of years have been very kind to Kaz, from winning the Block Star music contest at Seattle’s annual Capital Hill Block Party, to even winning a slot on an Esurance ad as “Anime Kaz” playing his song “It’s Okay” from his EP and full length album.

I met with Kaz the day after Bumbershoot this year in front of Bauhaus Books & Coffee on Pine St in Capital Hill. He had played the day before at Bumbershoot’s EMP Sky Lounge Stage to a packed house and even had a line of about 100 people waiting outside trying to get in to see him. His recent features on KEXP and CW seem to have played well in his favor.
We sat on the corner there on a beautiful Seattle day, mid 70s, not a cloud in the sky, and watched as old friends and automobiles strolled past; almost to the beat of Kaz’s elegant finger picking.
