Marissa Nadler & Mariee Sioux @ The Crepe Place - 2007.08.28

Marissa Nadler
On August 28th, Santa Cruz’s The Crepe Place put on the show with the help of Folk Yeah!. The turn out was not that great for the amount of talent the bands brought, I think maybe 30 people at the most showed up by the end of the evening although some apparently drove down from Sacramento.

Mariee Sioux started off the night and unfortunately didn’t have much of a crowd by 7:30pm. She didn’t disappoint however and played a beautiful set. She started with “Two Tongues At The Same Time” and also in her set were great versions of “Friendboats” and a great extended version of “Wild Eyes”. I highly recommend ordering her new album from her label: Grass Roots Record Co.

Next on the bill was Sean Smith. I am not going to really go into this guys music too much. I had to leave mid-set from a horrible headache (not from the music). It was however interesting to see various members of East Bay musicians with him including one from Howlin Rain.

This brings us to the wonderful Marissa Nadler. We caught her back in June and you can see those Videos and still download the live mp3s. Her set was great as always. I’ve been listening to her since her first album back in 2004 and love what her sound has evolved into. Her version at this show of “Fifty Five Falls” was exceptional, as was the song “Hyacinth”, which she interluded with Townes van zandt’s “Tecumseh Valley”. Certainly was a great intimate show which I will not forget for some time to come.
