Marissa Nadler @ Showbox - 2007.09.20

Marissa Nadler - chona

The very beautiful and talented Regina Spektor archetype (on guitar), Marissa Nadler, graced the Showbox stage early last night, willed with the duty of opening for Swedish superstars Pater Bjorn and John. Her gently lilting guitar arpeggios and graceful voice floated warmly over the cold early fall air rushing in through the double doors of the venue- a welcome greeting from the imminent rain outside.

Marissa Nadler - chona2Nadler took off into many songs and later announced that she had had “a really rough time in Portland last night” and was seriously almost in tears onstage”. This is hard to believe, considering the general warm acceptance of her music in the packed house last night.

“Next tour, I’m playing electric guitar!” she announced after plunging into two cover songs. “I think cover songs are the best way to approach a new audience.” The two songs, along with the rest of her set proved to be a real treat for all present at the show. Her music was gentle with subtle undertones of intense power to be honed.

Overall, Nadler’s set definitely did justice as opener to the high standard act Peter Bjorn and John, and I definitely await the next time she decides to drop in on Seattle.
